On Wednesday, 27 May 2026, at 11 AM, the Archaeological Museum in Split will present its new children’s publication, “Salonitan Landscape”, at the archaeological site of Salona (Tusculum). The publication is the first in a planned series of editions designed to introduce young audiences to the rich cultural and historical heritage of Salona.
A special feature of the event is the educational children’s programme preceding the publication presentation, which is expected to welcome almost 200 kindergarten and preschool children from various educational institutions. From 9 AM to 11 AM, children will take part in themed guided tours through Salona, along with art and creative workshops specially designed for the youngest participants.
Through this programme, Salona once again becomes a place of learning, exploration, and children’s first encounters with archaeology and cultural heritage — presented in a way adapted to their age through play, storytelling, creativity, and fun.
Created especially for young readers, “Salonitan Landscape” introduces children to the world of archaeology and the environment in which we live in an accessible, engaging, and educational way. Written in verse by author Jerko Rošin and illustrated with warm and distinctive artwork by Dijana Dora Rošin, the publication follows the adventures of archaeologist Nika, archaeologist Luka, and their charming feline assistant, Lady the cat.
Through their story, children discover what a landscape is, why it is important, what people gain from it, and how natural surroundings influenced the development of the first settlements and the rise of ancient Salona. In a simple and creative way, the publication connects everyday life, nature, and geographical space, while simultaneously introducing children to archaeology and the work of archaeologists, encouraging them to observe, explore, and better understand the world around them.
“Salonitan Landscape” is the first publication in a new series by the Archaeological Museum in Split dedicated to Salona and the cultural and historical heritage of one of Croatia’s most important archaeological sites. The series aims to develop contemporary educational content for children, families, and educational institutions.
During 2025 alone, the Archaeological Museum in Split organised more than 300 educational programmes with over 5,000 participants, continuously developing new models of heritage interpretation tailored to different generations of visitors, especially younger audiences.
